Inevitably, most engineers learn how to get way more power than necessary out of the engine than is actually needed. When you have such an excess, the best use is to direct it here - into the Power Transmission Laser.
Found in one of the most north-center rooms in the station - just left of the north airbridge and up a bit - this big machine can be configured much like a SMES, but instead of giving out power to the station, it fires it as a big laser.
