Research Trainee is a low-ranking job tasked with helping the Scientists and other Research personnel. In terms of access, they're essentially equivalent to Scientist. They can enter all the lab facilities in the Research Sector, but they can't go into maintenance tunnels or Tech Storage. If you don't mind the risk of dying a horrific death due to SCIENCE!, this job is otherwise fairly laid-back, making it a decent role for newbies.

When Can I Play Research Trainee?

Research Trainee is available exclusively to new and new-ish players. If you have more 75 rounds played, you cannot play this role. What counts towards the rounds played count?

  • For both RP and Classic servers, connecting to the server and declaring ready before roundstart
  • For the Classic servers, joining the round after roundstart, before the 40 minute mark and with no shuttle en route
  • For the RP servers, same as above but before the 60 minute mark.

The rounds can be non-consecutive, it doesn't matter which servers you spent those 75 rounds on since it's based on the number of rounds played across all servers (i.e. those 75 can be across all the servers or just one server), and choosing to observe doesn't count towards that 75.

A Brief History of Labradors

Research Trainees appeared very early in Space Station 13's history. Back then, they were called Research Assistants and went by that name for most of their existence (and even non-existence). They were one of the first jobs Exadv1, SS13's original creator, added to the game, making them older than Devstation. They never got to see Devstation though; Research Assistant and the other department-specific assistant jobs were merged into one single "Assistant" job on July 4th 2008,

Department-specific assistants were briefly revived in 2012, but only Technical Assistant and Medical Assistant came back. On September 24th, 2021, the job was re-added as a latejoin role, along with the Medical Assistant, Technical Trainee, and Head Surgeon.

On September 6, 2024, Research Assistant was renamed Research Trainee in order to distance the role from Staff Assistant and Security Assistant, which operate very differently from this role.

Crew Objectives

Strangely enough, the Research Trainee does not get objectives, unlike Medical Trainee and Technical Trainee
