Medical Assistants are essentially Staff Assistants with built in access to Medbay (but not anything inside Medbay). Medical Trainees are junior medical staff who help people to the best of their abilities in Medbay. They are often found following a Medical Doctor and helping them with triage, or working alongside a Roboticist or Geneticist doing whatever it is they do. This makes it a great job for a new player - simply ask someone if they could show you how to do their job, and they will often happily do so.

When Can I Play Medical Trainee?

Medical Trainee is intended for new players. In fact, it's available exclusively to new players; if you have more 75 rounds played, you can longer play this job, essentially making it a reverse time-lock. What counts towards the rounds played count?

 • For both RP and Classic servers, connecting to the server and declaring ready before roundstart
 • For the Classic servers, joining the round after roundstart, before the 40 minute mark and with no shuttle en route
 • For the RP servers, same as above but before the 60 minute mark.

The rounds can be non-consecutive, it doesn't matter which servers you spent those 75 rounds on since it's based on the number of rounds played across all servers (i.e. you can spend those 75 across all the servers or just one server), and choosing to observe doesn't count towards that 75.

A Brief History of Whiteshirts

Medical Trainees were previously called Medical Assistants, and they went under that name for much of their existence. This role has been around since practically SS13's inception, dating back to when its original creator, Exadv1, was still actively working on the game. As you might expect, Doctoring was pretty different back then, and as the old in-game document Job Information describes, their duties hewed more towards nurses than medical interns.

RIP

Sadly, on December 23, 2012, the shuttle containing this shift's technical and medical assistants crashed. Into the moon. Forever. The Staff Assistant job got the Medical Assistant's objectives in their stead.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

However, on September 24, 2021, due to ballooning server population, the job returned as a latejoin job, along with the Technical Assistant, Research Assistant, and Head Surgeon.

On September 6, 2024, Medical Assistants were renamed Medical Trainees to distinguish the role from Staff Assistant and Security Assistant, which do not have max round caps.

Crew Objectives

As a Medical Trainee, you can expect to see the following:

Make sure you are completely unhurt at the end of the round.
Just have 100 health. The simplest way to do this is to pump yourself with medicine near the end of the round, and if you're heading to the escape shuttle, hop into one of the sleepers for good measure.

Ensure the Head Surgeon gets off the station alive
The Head Surgeon started in Medbay and just had to be pulled onto the escape shuttle.

Escape on the shuttle alive as a monkey.
You basically have to ask the Geneticists to make them into a monkey.

Escape on the shuttle alive with a non-assistant ID registered to you.
Usually means asking the Captain or Head of Personnel for a job transfer or getting one off someone who couldn't be revived. Worth noting IDs for the other assistant types, i.e. Technical Assistant and Staff Assistant, do NOT count as "non-assistant".
