A Technical Assistant is a non-specialized Engineering-departmment employee who presumably failed to get their technical degree but are nonetheless tasked with assisting Engineering personnel with their work. As with the other two flavors of Assistants aboard station, it is impossible to hit a cap on Technical Assistants and a person joining the game late may always become one. They occupy a very low place on the official and de facto hierarchies of the station and alternate between being unfairly oppressed and giving provocation for further oppression. Despite being tasked with assisting technical personnel, they must ask the AI to enter sensitive areas such as Engineering proper. The room the Technnical Assistants spawn in has a a flash in it, this means this species of Assistant has a nice weapon to being with.
The tech storage also has some very nice computer parts and EPROM cartridges for a smart assistant to play with. With some technical knowledge and luck, it is possible to create a DWAINE computer with every program on it, or perhaps a stationwide PDA message broadcasting system. Who knows what else might be possible for a skilled technical assistant to accomplish?
