With a gas mask or breath mask equipped, click on the jetpack and activate it.  The pressure can be set as low as 17, any lower and you will suffocate. Right-click the jetpack and select 'toggle jetpack' to actually turn it on and start exploring space.

-In general, it is safer to have the jetpack on your back. After a nasty accident or attack which causes you drop your items, if it was in your hand you are now floating into space and away from the jetpack. You will almost definitely die, you probably won't even get up. As a last resort, you can throw items to manoeuvre your soon-to-be-corpse to the station. The same will happen if you run out of oxygen while exploring space, however you will have a small amount of time to connect more internals or get to the station.
